 # Supply of Nearly Half of Strategic Raw Materials Severely at Risk

Tuesday, 12.05.2026

Europe and Austria are economically and geopolitically dependent on critical raw materials. This is a growing security risk. Bottlenecks in supply chains threaten the supply of these materials and, with it, the competitiveness of the Austrian and European economy.

Supply is at risk to highly at risk for 12 of 17 strategic raw materials in the European Union. For eight of these 17 strategic raw materials, supply is considered highly at risk. These include lithium (for batteries), rare earths (for permanent magnets in motors, wind turbines, and electronics), and magnesium (for cars, packaging, and construction).

Circular economy measures offer the best way to free ourselves from this dependency, become immune to political blackmail, and safeguard our competitiveness.
